ACL tear is common in young people who play sports such as soccer. ACL is an important ligament in the knee that provides stability. If it is torn, the knee becomes unstable. He or she will not be able to play sports that requires pivoting like soccer.

When the ACL is torn, the knee become swollen and painful. The pain and swelling improve with time leaving unstable knee. People have recurrent injury when the knee is unstable. The meniscus (shock absorber of the knee) and cartilage can get damaged. This is usually painful.

ACL tear is treated with surgery to reconstruct the ligament. Intensive rehabilitation is required after the ACL reconstruction surgery to stabilise the knee when the new ligament is healing. The knee will become stable again after the surgery. After 6 months or so the patient can start to take part in sports gradually.
